The story of Ruth has always had a special place in my heart. It was one of my very favorite Bible stories growing up and, even yesterday, I woke up eager to complete my Bible reading for the day, because I knew that the whole book of Ruth was on the agenda. Many people love the story of Ruth, and yesterday I learned why the story itself is so charming. First of all (enter English major nerdiness), I learned that the book of Ruth is an idyll, meaning a brief story describing an event in rural, domestic life. Basically, Ruth a simple romance about common people from Bethlehem (and don't we love those simple love stories that seem like they might happen to us someday?). Secondly, the main theme of Ruth is kindness, shown through both the young widow, Ruth, who lovingly follows and provides for her mother-in-law in a foreign land, and through the kindness of a Godly, middle-aged man, Boaz, who protects, provides for, and eventually redeems the same poor, young widow. This small story is tucked into the middle of books chronicling tumultous times in Israel (Judges and I Samuel) where "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judges 21:25) and the volatile establishment of a monarchy in Israel (Saul and David). The placement of Ruth in the midst of these other stories shows that the Lord's will and kindness will always prevail despite earthly sin and difficult circumstances. Although the beginning of Ruth's story is very bleak, as she is childless, widowed, and living with her "bitter" mother-in-law, the resolution shows that God reigns. He is good, kind, and has a plan to bless those who are faithful to him. Despite her hardships, Ruth is one of the few women named as being a part of the ancestral line of Jesus. She is the great-grandmother of King David himself! Micah and I are beginning to plan out the details of our wedding ceremony, which is only three months away! I have always wanted my vows to my husband to include Ruth's pledge of faithfulness to Naomi, "...where you go, I will go...your people shall be my people, and your God my God..." (Ruth 1:16). My prayer is that even in the tumultous times of today, which, just as in the times of the judges, it seems that everyone just does "what is right in his own eyes" with no regard for the Lord or His commandments, my marriage with Micah will be a light in the darkness. My prayer is that by God's grace, the faithfulness and obedience in my marriage will be a simple, sweet story of God's love and kindness despite the sinful circumstances of the world today. *Note: I did, in fact, make Ruth's pledge to Micah during our wedding vows. Being married is sometimes hard; we fall short constantly and are desperate for God's grace as husband and wife. But in relying on Christ and not ourselves, I hope we truly are being a light in a dark world - we don't claim to be perfect, but instead we look to the One who is perfect to be our strength, our joy, and our hope. ... Cali – Part II {San Diego}
So sandwiched between our days in LA, we jetted down to San Diego for the weekend. Can you believe I've never been to San Diego? Not once. We went to Disneyland a few times growing up, we visited relatives in Northern California fairly often, and I was in a friend's wedding in Laguna Beach a few years ago, but I have NEVER been to San Diego until now. It was so fun, despite our funny "hostel" situation. We spent lots of time on the beach. I "surfed" a little (aka caught some waves, got up to my knees, wobbled around a little bit, etc.) and Micah surfed a lot. We had a picnic lunch on the beach both days, ate fish and chips for dinner both nights, and hunted down a funnel cake for dessert on Saturday. I got to read, take lots of fun pictures, and just relax. I also found a lovely little coffee shop right next to Pacific Beach called the Pacific Bean that served POWDERED white chocolate. If you know me at all, you know this made my weekend! The owner was super nice, but he asked me if I was a "spy" because I took so many pictures in his little shop. Ha! Although I am not a spy, here are some of my favorite pics from our San Diego adventure (with a stop in adorable San Clemente on our way down the coast)... Window shopping in San Clemente Pacific Beach More Pacific Beach...our fave! San Diego skies... Mission Beach on our funnel cake hunt... Us in San Diego... Goodbye Cali... I miss you already! ... Cali – Part I {Los Angeles}
I have been in California for the past week tagging along on Micah's business trip, and it has been amazing. I have decided that vacations are very necessary for me, because if I am anywhere near my home, I feel like I have to clean it or grocery shop or organize a closet or cook dinner or something. I will have a list for the day and I will try to conquer it. But in California, I do what I want. No list. No set plan. Especially on the days that Micah had work meetings. I think this sense of freedom comes from the fact that we stayed in a hotel. I love hotels! For two main reasons: 1) Hotels usually involve a king size bed. 2) Someone else cleans for you. I'm sold. So our trip involved three days in L.A., three days in San Diego, and two days back in LA. Having a husband who takes "business trips" is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Hello semi-free vacation! Today, is my first day back in Arizona. I loved our time in Cali, but honestly, I am excited to be back in the HEAT. I am not lying. It was actually a pretty hot week in California - low to mid 80s in the valley, low to mid 70s on the coast, but that just doesn't leave me warm to the bone. They still have that whole west-coast-wear-a-sweater-at-night thing going on, and I'm just not sure if that's who I am. I'm a 85 degrees after dinner, sit on a patio in sundress type of girl. One of the highlights to the L.A. portion of our trip is that I got to see lots of friends. First, I saw TCU friends, Sarah and Jayson, who just moved to LA this spring. They gave me a tour of the "Valley," drove me up Mulholland Drive, showed me the Brady Bunch house, and took me to Aroma Coffee and Tea to try to spot celebs. There were no celebs to be seen while we were there, but Joe Jonas was there last time Sarah visited the place. I also got to see one of my very best friends since middle school, Lauren. Gosh, I love this girl. She is expecting her first baby in a few weeks - a baby girl named Lily. I am so excited for her! We met up for lunch in Costa Mesa, went shopping at a little consignment shop for babies, and I got to touch her giant stomach again and again! It was a blast. Did you know I'm obsessed with all things pregnancy and childbirth? Well, I am. On the way home from Costa Mesa, I stopped by Huntington Beach to see my first college roommate, Jen. Can you believe it's been almost TEN YEARS since we were living together in Shirley Hall at TCU? I remember the first time we talked on the phone over the summer before freshman year to plan how to decorate our first dorm room. Now Jen is married and has a precious little boy, Cole! How time flies. It was GREAT to see her too. Here are some more pics of LA goodness.. I will share the San Diego portion of our trip tomorrow. Yummy food... Fun shopping... Lovin' CA Mini tour of the Valley from Sarah and Jayson Us in L.A. There is just something about California despite it's chilly-ness. We might move here someday... either San Diego or Nashville...which would you choose??? ... Read more
