This week I've been talking about how I have being challenged lately to be a better steward of the things I own. Yesterday, I offered my first four tips on how to best manage one's wardrobe. Here are my final pieces of advice regarding all things closet... 5 :: Lay out clothes the night before. Another reason I think we tend to wear the same thing over and over again is because we don't plan ahead. I am the biggest fan of choosing outfits for the next day at bedtime. I don't know about you, but I have noticed it takes me about three times longer to coordinate an outfit in the AM, and I end up wearing something boring or going for the clothes I already wear all the time... For some reason, at night, I just scan my closet and decide, "I will pair this with this, and wear these shoes." Bam. Done. Here's my outfit for tomorrow.Writing this blog post has inspired me to try wearing a short dress as a tunic with my cigarette pants. 6 :: Keep a running "needs" list somewhere in or near your closet. This is something I am going to try to get better at. From time to time I will jot down an item I need in my planner or in a journal somewhere, but I have never kept a running list in or near my closet. ***I must note here that I use the term "need" loosely. All we really need is some kind of fabric over our bodies to protect us from wind, rain, snow and sun and to allow us to enter into public places. For many people in many cultures, this is ALL they have. I don't really NEED anything.*** However, when I come across an item that would be an incredibly efficient addition to the clothes I already own and would help me dress appropriately for my current roles in life {teaching, etc.), I put it on the "needs" list. For me, this list is VERY short right now. For about five years now, I have NEEDED new white flats. I wear mine consistently from Easter to Labor Day {yes, I follow those silly rules} and I have had the same pair since 2004! That was a very long time ago and mine are in bad shape! I have been searching for a replacement pair every year and have yet to find one! The only other needs I have right now are for a black camisole {$3 at Forever 21 should take care of that} and a new strapless bikini. I wore mine to death. The back clip literally broke in half last month, and I don't like the new tan lines I am quickly acquiring!!! Now, if and when I shop, I can take this list with me to buy things that actually have a purpose in my wardrobe instead of buying a cute shirt that I absolutely do NOT need. 7 :: Don't be a sucker for sales. This leads me to the topic of sales. Sales are awesome. I love them. I love all things clearance rack, additional 20% off, rack out on the sidewalk, and discount store {Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, etc}. But sales can be overwhelming and result in poor spending. How many times in my life have I gone crazy at a sale and come home with $300 worth of clothes that only cost me $80 only to realize that I didn't need ANY of the clothes, even if they only cost me $80 total? I have tried to lay off the sales in recent months. Now there are times when I just can't pass up a $5 cardigan, but for the most part, I am trying to change my ways. If the things I need are on sale, then I am in heaven. But ultimately, I would rather spend a little more for higher quality on something I will wear all the time than buy ten things on clearance that will only get worn a few times or get destroyed quickly due to their poor quality. 8 :: CHALLENGE YOURSELF. Make fashion interesting by challenging yourself. I strongly recommend the 30 for 30 challenge, because it's short and sweet but very convicting. Other women have committed to stop shopping for clothes altogether for various amounts of time - a month, six months, a year. Some women have made a commitment to buy all secondhand clothing for a year, instead of new products. You can always recreate the ol' college roommate days and trade clothes and accessories with a girlfriend. Next time you need a dress for an event, I dare you to BORROW one instead of buying a new one! And when you see an outfit you like on someone else, make note of it or try to figure out what about their outfit caught your eye and see if you can make a similar look with things you already have in your own closet. Also, don't be afraid to play with your clothes like you did when you were little. If you have the time, experiment a little bit. You might attempt to wear your shirt backward or perhaps tie it up for a fresh look. If you are really daring perhaps you can turn a belt into a headband. The point is - have fun! Sometimes the result might be hideous, but you also might surprise yourself by discovering the next new trend! I took a few minutes to play around with my clothes at the end of the challenge, and this was the result! The first attempt at the skirt/loose top look was pretty ugly, but after tying up the shirt and adding some boots, I loved the result. Micah told me I looked like June Carter! Best compliment ever! A Good Steward: Clothes {Part 2}
Yesterday I talked about how I have being challenged lately to be a better steward of the things I own. So today I am going to offer some of my best ideas on how to manage one's wardrobe. During the month of August, I wore the same 21 articles of clothing for 31 days. It was a good lesson for me to be creative with what I already own and to realize how many amazing articles of clothing I have in my own closet. Basically, I had 31 days to think about how to stretch my wardrobe to the max, so here are the first four tips I'd like to share with you... 1 :: Organize your closet by style, color or both and ROTATE! I once heard a stat that most people only wear 10-20% of all the clothes they own. This means that even though we have a lot of clothes we wear the same outfits over and over again. This is my solution to that problem. Organize your closet either by style (long sleeved shirts together, short sleeve, tanks, skirts, dresses, etc.) or by color (all yellow tops together, green tops, etc. regardless of sleeve length) and stick to this organization very carefully. Then you rotate through each section. This means if you keep all your yellow shirts together and you wear one, you move that one to the back of the section and wear ALL your other yellow tops before that one reaches the front again. Or if you simply organize by style, you might have all your skirts together. If you wear a skirt, it goes to the back of the skirt section and you can't wear it again until all your other skirts have been worn. Eventually every item gets pushed to the front of the section and that's when it's time to re-wear that item. For me, I have my shirts divided into sections: long sleeved and short sleeved/sleeveless. Since I live in the hot, hot desert I pretty much haven't touched the long sleeved section in six months, except to grab a cardigan for chilly restaurants and movie theaters. But I sort all my short sleeve shirts and tanks together by color and try to wear each shirt from each color section before I will repeat an item. I have been doing this for years and I feel like I wear at least 90% of my wardrobe. You just have to decide which way your closet rotates (from L to R or R to L) and stick with the plan. Here is my long sleeved section organized by color. I haven't worn these clothes in soooo long and I miss them! Do you think I might have a slight obsession with gray? 2 :: Purge your closet consistently. I have an obsession with cleaning out closets. Before there were shows like Hoarders and all the other home organization programs out there, my friends and I joked around that I should start a TLC show about closet cleaning. I seriously love it. And I love cleaning out mine the most. I officially clean out my closet at least every other month, and I always have an ongoing purge happening. The nice thing about the rotation system above is that if you run into something you absolutely don't want to wear in your rotation, it probably means it doesn't need to be in your closet anymore. And if you wear something and discover that it fits awkwardly or uncomfortably, you can get rid of it as soon as you get home that day. Hopefully the awkward is not caused by unknown holes, gaps, or see-through discoveries made when you are out in public. During my 30 for 30 challenge, I wore these shoes that I haven't worn in forever. They hurt my feet so badly I wanted to cry. They went into the get-rid-of pile the second I got home. Purge, baby, purge. 3 :: Sell your clothing. Did you know that if you clean out your closet often, you can actually sell your clothes for cash? Most people only clean out their closet every year or two {or longer - ew!}, and by the time they fill those big garbage bags with unwanted items, the clothes are so old, worn, or outdated that nobody wants them. Sometimes their status is so bad, you feel guilty about giving them to the thrift store. If you stay on top of your wardrobe and get rid of things as soon as they become unwanted, your clothes will often still be trendy and in good enough condition to sell at stores like Plato's Closet, Buffalo Exchange, etc. Many towns often have other independent secondhand stores as well that give cash for gently used clothes {and most stores take men's clothes too, so feel free to clean out the husband's side of the closet!}. I usually save up my closet purgings for a few months and then take a couple bags to both Plato's Closet and a Phoenix store called My Sister's Closet. Whatever does not get bought by these two stores goes to the Goodwill. If you are looking for other donation ideas, your city might have local women's shelters that take clothing donations for their residents. 4 :: Keep accessories accessible. One of the best and easiest ways to spice up an outfit is with fun accessories. However, I know I am guilty of often forgetting about the accessories I own. During my 30 for 30 challenge, I was desperate to make my 21 items of clothing look different each time I wore them, so I delved deep into my headband pile, found belts I had long forgotten about, and wore more necklaces in one month than I had worn all year. Accessories are great, but we often forget we have them. Necklaces get tangled, belts get pushed to the back of the closet, handbags get thrown under the bed, and hair accessories get smashed under hairbrushes in drawers {I just described my own woes with accessories!} So put your accessories out where you can see them. Untangle, unsmush, organize and WEAR! I found this cute neutral belt in my closet during the challenge. I bought it last spring at TJ Maxx and had since forgotten about it. It still had the tags on when I added it to this outfit! Also, notice I doubled up my necklaces! {My face on the left represents my insecurity about wearing a romper for the first time ever.} ***Here is a great necklace holder I bought from Aunt Dede's Basement last month. It is an adorable way to organize jewelry and Dede is offering all my reader's 20% off this month. Just enter BlogAnniversary at checkout! You can even customize your rack by choosing your own knobs! Shop Aunt Dede's Basement! I hope these ideas help you wear your clothes wisely! I will be back tomorrow with four more tips. Hope to see you then. A Good Steward: Clothes {Part 1}
Do you ever feel like God is teaching you something and it's going to be the theme of your life for a while??? Well, that's me right now. I feel like God is teaching me all things stewardship... How to be grateful for what I already own. How to say "no" to buying things I don't need. How to manage our home better to save money. How to get really disciplined about finances and following a budget. Here's the thing. I've always had enough. I've always had more than enough in fact. I've had a job ever since I turned sixteen. I've often had two jobs at once. I'm a hard worker. I'm a saver. I've always had enough money to go out to dinner with friends or buy a new shirt at the mall. I mean, I don't often buy a steak dinner and I always shop the sale racks. But I have more than enough. But I think God is trying to teach me that enough is enough. I don't need "more." The one area I have always struggled in when it comes to spending my money wisely is clothes. I love them. I've always enjoyed shopping. I love finding a good deal. I appreciate feeling well dressed. And, as an adult, I've loved being able to embrace my own style and feel comfortable in my clothes without being swayed by every passing trend. Cardigans, gold buttons and pointy-toe shoes for life, y'all! But God has been rockin' my world lately. Telling me to just say NO. I don't need to shop. I have a closet full of beautiful clothes. I could hardly wear every item I own in a full year. For those of you who have been here a while, you know that I recently did a 30 for 30 challenge where I chose thirty items to wear for an entire month. The goal of the challenge is to create new outfits with clothes you already own, instead of going out and buying new ones. You can see days 1-9, 10-20 and 20-30 of the challenge here. And the funny thing is that I didn't even end up using 30 items. I only used 21. Lesson learned: I really don't need as many clothes as I think I do. Here is a collage of almost all 30 days... Since the challenge, I've really been thinking about how to be a better steward of my wardrobe. I do enjoy fashion and shopping, and neither of those things is bad in and of themselves, but they need to be enjoyed in moderation. So I will be back tomorrow with my thoughts on how to best manage one's wardrobe... Hope to see you then! Linking to the lovely Jami... ... Read more
