Every semester I tell myself that I will go into hiding the last month of the term. No parties. No social outings. No visitors. So I can get all my presentations prepped, papers written, and students' papers graded in peace. At a non-frantic pace. And you know what? It never happens. If anything, we have more visitors and traveling and craziness during the final month of each semester. I don't know why it happens; it just does! And I love it. Last year, I was sitting at a beautiful breakfast with my best friend on the day my last paper was due. After she left for the airport around noon, I desperately finished it before the 5pm deadline. Fun? Yes. Frantic? That too. My office mates told me they get all their papers done two or three days in advance. I admire them... But my life just doesn't work that way. My life works like this... Had to make the transition to Timeline... Facebook doesn't respect my attempt to be studious. This is Malachi. My first laptop, purchased in 2005. This year he died completely, and I threw him in the trash can the other day when I got sick of looking at him in my closet. RIP Malachi. Jaunt to Vegas for Micah's birthday. With friends in tow! The kitchen bulletin board needed an update... obviously. Break for ice cream. The closet needed to be cleaned out. My favorite activity of all time. Shopping. Old Navy has some legit deals right now. Sister came for her spring break. My spring break doesn't match up with anyone else's, so basically I celebrate spring break at least three times each year with various visitors. It's a win/lose for me. Super fun, but not very productive. Another ice cream break. Micah thinks I have a problem... Another quick trip to Vegas. Yes, we had to climb the gate at Grandma's house to go on a Starbucks run... That sister. Can't get enough of her... When sister comes, a shopping break is a necessity. I tried on 38 items at Nordstrom Rack. Don't worry. I only bought one. Oh, and I threw a baby shower... Then I had to relax after said baby shower... Then I had to attempt to fit back into my pants after a month of way too much traveling and parties and fun... And, now, it's time to study... {If you want to follow along on Instagam, my name is @jenrussum}. *Linking up with Finding Beauty and Bits of Splendor.* ... Read more
Flowers Fade Friday: Semi-Permanent
For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you might recall that I have been in extreme pain this week. Micah and I went to a fitness class called "boot camp" at our gym on Sunday night and by Monday morning I was already aching like mad. By the afternoon I could barely stand up, sit down, or get out of my car. I even had to put my hands on the toilet seat {!!!} to lower myself down. I know that's too much information, but it's the truth. At least it was my own bathroom, which I keep fairly clean. At one point in the day, I tweeted my college roommates to remind them of the only other time I've experienced this type of post-workout pain... the night we decided to do lunges all the way around our block. The aftermath was hands-on-the-toilet-seat painful. And one of them tweeted me back to say that lunges were the second worst decision of her life... the first being when she gave her hair to Locks of Love and walked out of the salon {in tears} with a mushroom haircut {which was somewhere between a bob and bowl cut... I was there as a witness.} Greenhouse Girls... one of our best moments. Love these ladies. Now bear with me as I share with you a tangent of my mind after this tweet. This is where I transition from aching muscles to hair dye to the Gospel. I began thinking that in all reality, my aching muscles from boot camp are only temporary. Hopefully, they will be gone by the time this post is published. Although I am in extreme pain right now, it will be over in a day or two, kind of like temporary hair dye that comes out with one or two washes. Then I thought of Camille's mushroom haircut as semi-permanent, like the kind of hair dye that gradually fades out over the course of 6-8 weeks. It didn't go away quite a quickly as my achy muscles; she had to deal with the awkward length for a few months as it grew out {and those months included lots of photographs as we were bridesmaids in our other roommates' weddings that summer!}. Then I began to think about what permanent pain looks like. Losing a limb or becoming a burn victim were the first things to come to mind {my mind is weird...} And then I stopped myself. Amputation and burns are not permanent. They are semi-permanent too. Sure, they last longer than a bad hair cut or a broken arm, but they are not permanent. Nothing painful is permanent. No trial is lasting. That is the hope of the Gospel. All injuries, sicknesses, sad circumstances, deformities... all are semi-permanent because of Christ. One of my favorite promises of the Bible says that... "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." Revelation 21:4 I had to put my mind in check during this tangent. My perspective can be so inaccurate sometimes. The apostle Paul says it best... So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. II Corinthians 4:16-18 If you are in Christ, nothing painful is permanent. Every trial and sickness we face on this earth is really nothing more than momentary achy muscles in light of eternity. Instead, Christ is permanent. And someday He will conquer every hurt and every sadness, even death itself. Sometimes, I must remind myself of that, because my sinful mind likes to think that the petty trials I face are much bigger than they actually are. Here's to remembering the hope we have in Christ during every semi-permanent trial in this life on earth. * Linking up with Call Me Blessed * ... Read more
Banana Nutella Cake {best ever!}
As promised, here is the recipe for the Banana Nutella Cake I made for Micah’s birthday last month… It was delicious by the way…. one of my favorite cakes I’ve ever made. What you need: 1 box yellow cake mix 2 eggs 1/3 cup oil 1 cup buttermilk 3 bananas {very ripe and smashed – brown ones from the freezer work great!} ½ cup of Nutella For the frosting: 1 {8oz.} package of cream cheese {I used the whipped kind} 1/2 cup butter {slightly softened, not melted; room temperature butter works well} 3 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 TBSP milk {use more if needed to make frosting smooth} 3 TBSP Nutella {optional} What you do: Mix together cake mix, eggs, oil, buttermilk and bananas on medium until batter is mostly smooth {a few banana chunks are okay} These uglies will become something beautiful! Pour into two round cake pans if you want to do a layer cake. Grease well. I always use wax paper and grease the paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-32 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let layers cool partially in pan and then move to a rack. When cake is fully cooled, place one layer on a cake stand and cover the top in a nice thick layer of Nutella. Place second layer on top. To make the frosting, mix the cream cheese, butter, vanilla, milk and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. Add more milk if needed to make a smooth consistency. I did a plain cream cheese frosting, but you might try adding a few tablespoons of Nutella as you mix the frosting if you want to increase the Nutella flavor of the cake. The result will be light brown instead of a white. Frost your cake and ENJOY! *Linking up with Stonegable and Tatertots & Jello* ... Read more
