Hello fall... kind of. This is what fall looks like in Phoenix. It's a warm morning in late September. Time for an iced Havana latte from LGO. A few days later it drops into the 70s at night. We are talking straight up autumnal weather. Time for hot chocolate while I study in the evening. Next day... it's still freaking hot outside. Like 102 degrees. This huge (32 oz.) Arnold Palmer was only $2.00 at AJ's. I might become addicted to these things. I think we might finally be past our 100 degree days though. My weather app is telling me to expect temps in the low 90s all week. If it gets down to 89 degrees, I'm totally wearing a scarf. Here are some of the other fall-ish happenings around our home that aren't centered around beverages... Hello food processor. Ready to make some soup this fall. Hello new dress. Trying to find things that look fall-ish but still allow me to breathe in the heat. Hello Indian Summer. Sunset on campus as I walked to my night class. Hello lovely hair nets. Micah and I got to serve dinner at a teen mom's ministry recently. Hello ASU football. I had never been to a game until this season. Hello new sermon series. We just started going through I Peter at church and I love it. Hello piles of productivity. I conquered school stuff while Micah was out of town last weekend. I finally feel like I am settled into the semester {it's only taken me about six weeks!!!} Hello leopard print. Apparently I have a thing for leopard print shoes. Can't wait to wear the green pair when it gets a bit cooler out! Hello pumpkin ice cream. I will eat you. Hello doodles in class. Meditating on Ephesians 2 lately. That's it for now. Hopefully in my next set of Instagrams you will see me wearing a scarf and boots! |Linking with: Hello Monday and InstaFriday| ... Read more
Flowers Fade Friday: The Lie
Day after day I hear the most pervasive lie... --You deserve to be happy... --Marriage is about making each other happy... --Do this {or that} and you will be happy... Lies all lies. But it's a lie my foolish heart likes to believe... because happiness, comfort, and contentment are so appealing to my flesh. Happy makes me feel good. But this life is not about happiness. My purpose is not to strive for happiness and comfort. God never promised me happiness. He never promised comfort and easy days and laughter. No. He has promised to make me holy. He has promised to love me always. He has promised me His Spirit to convict me and guide me. He has even promised to discipline me, like a loving Father, when my sin leads me away from the goodness God has for me. He has promised to keep me on the narrow path and walk with me every step of the way. And God has suggested, guaranteed even, that in this life I will suffer. He has indicated that there will be many times where I will be unhappy and uncomfortable, often for the sake of Christ and the Gospel. For the sake of good news and God's glory. Yet, God has called me to be sober-minded. To face each day with a joy that overcomes suffering and discomfort. To thank Him for circumstances, however difficult, that bring about holiness in my own life or allow me to share the good news of Christ with others. God has given me a sober mind that can expect and even accept hardships, because of the hope I have in the kingdom to come. No, God has not promised my happiness here on earth, but He has promised me something far better... joy forevermore in Jesus Christ. And joy for eternity outweighs happiness for today. Always. *Linking up with She Reads Truth* ... Read more
Texas on my Mind
My birthday present from Micah was getting to take a trip to Texas to visit my best friends from college. The weekend was sheer joy. When I got back, one of my friends from Phoenix said my face looked so genuinely happy in all my pictures from the weekend. And it’s true. I love my friends and I could not have asked for a more blessed weekend of fun, laughter, sharing our faith, exploring Fort Worth {and seeing how much it’s changed just in the last two years!}, and just the general antics of being around your closest friends who know your heart and history. I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking but some highlights include: …eating at Uncle Julio’s, my favorite Mexican restaurant on the planet. I didn't even get a meal; I just ate handmade tortillas and queso for about an hour straight. …game night and book club. Getting to spend two nights in a row with my best friends and their families. Both nights included some variation of The Game of Things… hilarious. …visiting babies. So many of my friends have had babies since the last time I was in Fort Worth. It was so fun to meet these brand new human beings! And it’s such a privilege to watch my friends become moms and see the way they love and care for their children! …driving through TCU’s campus on a school day. Gosh, those little undergrad frogs are so cute. I just might have yelled some words of affirmation at them and hung out the window taking pictures while they walked to class. …visiting a former professor and leaving so inspired and encouraged that my long trek into academia is totally worth it. Where the yelling and cheering for undergrads took place... Taco night. Babies!!! Game night. Game day. We were going to go to the game, but it inconveniently got scheduled at 6pm which conflicted with book club, so we watched the game, ate pizza, and then had our book discussion. I took a lot of pictures of the television, which helped me pretend I was actually at the game. Kristin always finishes her book club book, usually before everyone else.... Stacey finished the book while we were watching the game. This September was our FIVE YEAR anniversary of book club. Can you believe it!? Food truck park. Frog fountain. Best professor in the world. No really. I'm not just saying that. He was ranked as one of America's top 300 professors by US World and News Report. Dr. Pitcock let us/made us sneak into the Chancellor's private dining hall. It was rad! Getting crazy in TCU's new debate chamber. My dorm my first semester of college. Sweet memories... I love Fort Worth. ... Read more
