I don't remember the first time I heard about "Coronavirus," now better known as COVID-19. It was probably over Christmas. We were traveling in Washington, and I'm pretty sure I caught a few snippets of news about some virus that was killing people in Wuhan, China. Little did I know that the same virus would so greatly impact my life -- all our lives -- just a few months later. The virus hit slightly closer to home when I received a voicemail from my mother-in-law one day after work in late January. We were a few days away from celebrating my sister-in-law's 40th birthday. Micah's entire family was flying down from Washington to rent a beach house for the weekend. Kayla had friends coming from various parts of the country to join the festivities. Cheri works in the Communications Department at a large hospital up in Washington. Her voicemail went something like this: "Oh hi, Jen, it's been a crazy week. Did you hear that our hospital is treating the first U.S. citizen to test positive for Coronavirus? The media is flooding the hospital, and I've been working 12-hour days. It's nuts. I am so excited for the beach trip, but I am just so, so busy that I don't think I can help out with renting the linens or planning the groceries. Do you mind taking care of those logistics?" Of course, I didn't mind. A week later, Micah's whole family and a bunch of Kayla's friends congregated on the beach for four days. We got PERFECT weather - 75 degrees in January - and had a great time. We didn't know that in a few months everyone else would have their family reunions and vacations canceled. We didn't know what was about to hit us harder than the waves crashing against the beach during our happy, sunny weekend together... ... Read more
Maternity Photos at Scorpion Gulch
I originally asked my dear friend Shalyn to take some maternity photos for us when we visited Arizona back in February. I knew we would have an extended-family beach shoot a few weeks prior, but I wasn't sure if we would have time for any bump photos, and I wanted to make sure I got some maternity shots. Plus, my girls always smile for Shalyn. She's magic. A few hours before we were scheduled to meet up, Shalyn suggested we try pictures at a historic location called Scorpion Gulch near our house in Arizona. I had never been before and it was so cool. The site was originally a trading post by South Mountain that operated from the 1930s-1960s. Now, it's a fun place to run around, ride horses, and take photos. We saw 1st birthday and quinceaƱera shoots happening while we were there. Everyone smiled, the bump was captured, the girls and Shalyn's boys ran around together in the dirt, and then we all headed home together for a pizza + game night. ... Read more
Maternity Photos on the Beach
At the end of January, Micah's entire family spent a weekend on the beach for his sister's 40th birthday. We did one day at Disneyland and spent the rest of our time by the ocean. We stayed at the Newport Beach home we lived in when Eisley was born and it was so much fun to be back in our old stomping grounds. We started praying for good weather around Christmas, and the Lord blessed us with a sunny 75-degree weekend in the middle of winter. We gifted Micah's mom a family photoshoot for Christmas, and what better place to take the photos than during our beach weekend? We did an hour-long shoot with Vienna Rose Photography, and even though it was a little chaotic with 8 children ages 6 and under, it went well overall. The kids sometimes smiled and looked at the camera. The setting sun glistened on the water. And we even got to sneak in a few individual family photos and maternity shots. ... Read more
